Whether you’re taking recreational flying lessons or are training to become an airline pilot, you’ll want to get every ounce of value out of your training. That can only happen if you commit to making the most of each lesson!
Here are some things you can do to make sure you get as much as possible from your flight instruction:
Get a good night’s sleep.
Showing up well-rested will make your lesson easier and more successful. You’ll be physically and mentally prepared to take on new challenges and retain your lesson if you get 7-9 hours of rest. (No, coffee is not a substitute for sleep!)
Show up consistently and on time.
This is a commitment to yourself and your career. Take it seriously! We recommend scheduling 2 to 3 lessons each week so that you can build your skills – practice makes perfect, after all. If you need to cancel a lesson, please let us know ASAP so that we can reschedule you quickly. And please try not to be late to your lessons – every minute counts!
Refresh your memory.
While you’re waiting for your instructor, find a quiet place to sit (like our lobby or your car) and mentally walk through everything you know. Read through your notes, and pretend to do any maneuvers you’re trying to perfect. Your brain will be primed and ready to build on what you’ve just rehearsed.
Make notes of anything you don’t understand.
Your instructor will have reading materials for you. Make a list of anything you want to discuss or review. That way you won’t forget to ask anything that could be crucial information for your next lesson.
Get involved with our community.
High Flight Academy has frequent seminars, forums and presentations (as well as fun social events). Participate in our “extra-curricular” activities to make sure you don’t miss any opportunities for career advancement or supplemental learning. We also encourage you to mingle with other students so you can learn from each others’ insights and experiences. Most events are free, so you won’t want to miss out!
We have a recruiting event coming up on September 21!
We also send a monthly email newsletter with information about upcoming events and career training sessions. Sign up here!
